RF mixer vs. optoelectronic mixer

Excuse me,about the article http://www.odyseus.nildram.co.uk/RFI...Cell_Mixer.pdf ,is the 1dB-compression point right?I don't think the 1dB drawn in Figure 1 is correct.

I'm quite confuse... what is the different between transistor as a mixer and transistor as an amplifier? And what kind of transistors that can be used as an optoelectronic mixer? Anyone can help?
