How to bulid a simple Laser machine

I want to bulid a home-made laser machine (that can generate laser), could you give some ideas on how to bulid it by the material we can get from market, thanks!

Look for the Amateur Scientist section in the Scientific American magazine. In the years '60 '70 and '80 there are several laser construction projects:
He-Ne, CO2, Dye, Copper, etc.
