s band vco

I want to design s band vco. If the source and terminating network of local oscillator is design using transmission line and stubs without using discrete components ,Can it be change to vco by inserting varacter diode?

Can VCO can only be design using discrete component?

Please tell me a good book which guide me in designing VCO.(Practical approach)

or you may use the method of negative impedance to design.
