designing an optical power meter...need advice

hi..i'm theenes ..ENE undergraduate..well ,this year i'm doin my final year project on designing a lower cost optical power meter..
since i propose that, optical source which i going to use will be driven through fiber optic to photo diode..
so can i use IF-D91 plastic fiber optic photodiode?....and bout the optic source? which kind of laser diode is compatible for these photodiode..and this optic source must connected to fiber optic?so what kind of optic source can i use?...and what kind of connectors i will be dealing with?by the way..can i use PIC 16F876A/77A to design my optical power meter..hoping for replies..
