Hi ,

How to measure PAE ( power added efficiency ) for power amplifier in cadence
and what are the input signals if you designing for class A PA for IEEE 802.11a standards.Thank you in advanced.

PAE formula that can be used with any simulator is:
PAE = (Pout – Pinp)/Pdc
where
Pout = Output power of the PA
Pinp = Input power of the PA
Pdc = DC power of the PA (Vcc * I_total)

Usually the Linear-PA manufacturers (used in WLAN, CDMA, WCDMA etc), they don’t specify the input power. They specify only the gain of the PA, and you can calculate the input power.
For example if the PA has Gain = 27dB and you are looking for Pout = +18dBm, the input power will be 18dBm-27dB = -9dBm.
As I said, this is valid only for linear PA’s used in WLAN, CDMA. WCDMA…

In figuring out the output power, you also need to keep in mind saturated output power and linearity backoff. PA's have a saturated output power, which is the maximum output power that they will output. Typically, in saturation, a PA will suffer from lot's of spectral re-growth, and so the output spectrum can degrade for non-constant envelope modulations.
PA Backoff is the amount of output power below saturation that you need to operate, to keep the linearity. For example, a PA with a +33 dBm Psat, operated at +6 dB backoff, will put out +27 dBm. If you have 25 dB of gain in the PA, then your input needs to stay below +2 dBm.

why not use the ADS to design the power amplifier?
