My personal favorite is a spectrum analyzer. You can troubleshoot oscillators, mixers etc, very quickly. The architecture of a spectrum analyzer is very interesting also beacuse it incoroporates all the good rf circuitry.

It all depends on the frequency range. For ranges below about 500 MHz the oscilloscope is very good, especially the modern ones that will do calculations on the signal.

From all my instruments, the one I use the most besides a DMM and scope is my HP Communications Analyzer. It gives a lot of information at the touch of a button, power, distortion, SNR, modulation etc. Very handy box for RF work.

At home or somewhere else?

Well nothing beats Network Analyzers! I would put Spectrum Analyzers in second place.

At home I have a small function generator and a small oscilloscope.

have you people checked out ebay ?

I've seen that they've been selling HP8753 Vector network analyzers for with S-parameter test set for 4995S 300kHz-3GhZ.

This is what I am saving for...
In a couple of years, when I've gathered my money, they'll probably
be selling for < 4kS

Agilent wrote very interesting AN's.
On 1287 series you may find how and why SA are often more useful and friendly than VNA. Basically the target user make the difference. Designed for field technicians the SA while VNA are for research and production.

It is a question of applications.
A spectrum analyzar can't give you S parameters measurements. For most of applications it doesn't gine time domain measurement. Noise figure measurement might be done not aqurate and more.
Network Analayzer canot present a full band spectrum. It also can't give you time domain (rise time etc.) and so on

as RF designer u must love all the instruments coz they r ur eyes

but the question is which vendor of them do u preffer ?

my favourite is signal generator. But i have some prob here, is it a normal signal generator(max=1MHz) can increase the frequency up to 1GHz

Which is most suitable for functional testing of a chip

Back in the 1980's, I read HP and Tektronix catalogs and dreamed about owning a wall full of equipment.

Now we have eBay. For not too many thousands of dollars plus some repair work, I have amassed a variety of network/spectrum/modulation/logic analyzers, scopes, counters, signal generators, meters, calibration devices, and other stuff that probably cost a half million dollars back then.

For me, the most versatile instrument has been a Tek 7104 scope with lots of plug-ins. The most educational instrument: HP 8505A network analyzer (I wanted to l learn more about RF design). Most unusual instrument: HP 5373A modulation analyzer.

Rule of thumb when buying 20 year old equipment: Tektronix scopes, HP analyzers. Don't reverse!

What is the difference of this devices and the ate testers from Advantest , cresdence and agilient etc....

I too have bought a lab full of gear on ebay. But I must caution readers that ebay is not as great as it used to be! Over the last year I have seen a huge proliferaton of crooks trying to steal your money. Just a word to the wise, if you think you have won a nice Network analyzer or TDS oscilloscope for S1000, think again! You are going to get ripped off. Don't buy from sellers with less than a feedback list 100 buyers long, and also don't buy test equipment from some guy who sells beanie babies, auto parts, or whatever! Unless it looks like the seller routinely sells quality test equipment, and has been doing it for years, kiss the S goodby.


SA and VNA uses for different type of problem and cannot replace each other.

Usable RF-lab have hp 8594 spectrum analyzer with sweep-generator (latest is very importent - SA without sweepgenerator is more or less useless IMHO), VNA as hp 8753 in latest possible version (I not like modern VNA based on NT4 etc., ie. missing feelings, have lot of bugs in programs from windowsprogrammers wannabees and cannot print in hpgl-format or different kind of true vectorformat for resizeable plots without quality loss) and two RF-signal generator (need for IM measure) plus lot of cables, combiners, attenuators, line stretchers and connectors etc.

If you have this in lab, you can make very much in RF-design.


... and one VNA HP8753 in hobby corner is still a wet dream...

PS: I have HP applications note 95 from 1968 on paper, describe S-parameter measure and design without expensive VNA and use phase sensivity RF-voltmeter and using line stretcher and slide screw tuner - slowly measure but possible without very expensive equipment - but hp8753 is far away easier...

I've just purchased an R3131 SA and HP54112D DSO on ebay (still drooling for a VNA), very good tools when dealing with embedded design and wireless comm. Unfortunately, the SA is without TG :(, not able to make scalar measurements.
Biff44, agree, many crooks on ebay, I see often a lot of "offers", for example E versions of Agilent SA priced at 1-2kS from guys with 0 feedback. Makes me lough, but for those who pay those money I don't think it will make them lough too. What I've noticed is that the same "great deal" is most of the times available on almost all ebay sites (.de, .co.uk, .it, .fr...), the pictures are the same, description somehow similar, perhaps contact e-mails similar, but the seller is different (but with the same 0 or very low feedback).

I upgraded from my old HP8505 VNA to the later HP8753A. Also a ebay deal. Seller said it was OK and passed all its tests, but forgot to mention once warmed up for a few minutes it started loosing phase-lock and if left for some time, would not lock at all. Took me a couple of days to find the fault. On these old instruments forget about any technical help from HP or any manuals with circuits. I had only a block diagram to work with, my experience and LOTS of patience. It was also one of those as-is deals, so be aware!
