big planar antenna

Hi!

Does anybody know any planar antenna or any substrate for microstrip antennas that can handle/support high power? I mean something around 4 kW. I'm starting a project on a planar antenna array for remote sensing, but I'm having some dificulties in find an apropriate element which supports the high power.

Thanks!

If the antenna has to be planar and I assume you mean a microstrip structure. You may want to consider a ceramic dielectric.

Another possibility is a planar slotted waveguide array.

You don't mention the wavelength or desired bandwidth. How much gain do you want? What are the size requirements? What is the application? What are the feed requirements?

Just some things to consider.

The antenna will be used in an array, for a remote sensing application. The bandwidth should be from 350 to 450 MHz, with a gain no lower than 9 dB. The area for the array is limited to 1.3x0.8 m.

I don't think only in microstrip antennas, but in PIFAs as well. It depends on the power supported.

Thank you!

Based on the aperture size and gain requirement I would consider a pyramidal horn as an alternative. It is easy to fabricate and hard to hurt with transmitted power particularly if you can use a waveguide to feed it.

Commercial horns are available. Look at MI Technologies and you may find what you need and save yourself the time to design one.

I can guess the objection to the horn. It is a given that the antenna is always too DA!@## big.

Dear Jurbrian,

I concur some of the repliers are right. With that high power handling, plus you want it to be in an array in the end, it is wiser to use waveguides instead. These elements are well known to handle high power feeding.

Or maybe, something you can think about, micro-machined PIFAs. This means possibly a solid metal PIFA but suspended in air. So all design equations are based on an air-substrate. I don't know if it'll work, but it's worth a thought.

Hope this helps,
Dave
