wideband limiter

I’d like to build a wideband limiter. The problem being that using 2 limiter diodes requires that they be placed 1/4 wavelength apart. By definition 1/4 wavelength is narrowband.
My understanding is that the two limiter diodes are placed at this distance so that the maximum reflected energy from the cleanup limiter helps turn on the higher power first limiter diode.
How do I get around the 1/4 wavelength limitation? Lumped element?

Can anyone suggest a reference?
