Rectangular Array Antenna

Hello

I have designed a single patch rectangular antenna with a waveport and an inset fed. I'm trying to do patches to this antenna and I'm not getting the right results! I'm loosing gain and directivity! Can anyone help me out with this? I can send you guys the single patch!

Thanks,
Sam

I don't know how you added the additional patches, but did you check the current distribution (use (vector) current animation). If you want more gain in vertical direction, the currents in the patches should be in phase.

Other thing can be that when you add too many wide band patches (as a chain), you may get a traveling wave pattern rather then a standing wave pattern.

Hello WimPFP

I seriously don't understand! I'm looking to have a directional radiation with OK gain but when I add patches I'm loosing both... Do you have step by step direction on how to add patches the correct way on HFSS? I can send you my single patch and you can look at it f that help? I'm in serious need of help and no one at my group can help me!

Thanks,
Sam

Hello,

As I understand, you want an array for getting more gain, not for getting increased bandwidth.

Basically, you can couple them with a corporate feed network, or a series feed network. Combinations are possible also.

Do a search on: Patch array series feed and patch array corporate feed. This will guide to ideas how to distribute the power across the patches.

I am not familiar with HFSS. Is your problem in the design of the array, or in how to use the SW.

My problem is not with the software but my design is done using HFSS! I thought i'm not getting good results because of the software that's why i'm asking?

I'll check those feeding techniques and I'll let you know if I have any question.

Do I understand you well that you used a kind of intelligent library in HFSS to do the patch array design? If so, try to find a patch array geometry from which you are sure it is OK. Try to simulate it and compare the results. Did you check the substrate parameters and thickness?

Did you reduce the mesh size for your current design to find out if that is an issue? Maybe you can post the design with current density plot.

hello WimRFP
how can you check the current distribution in HFSS? I have no idea! Let us say I have a series fed patch antenna on XY plane and I'm adding patches in series how can I check the current source? I'm exciting my array with a waveport! Does that work?

Thanks
sam

Hello,

I don't know HFSS. If you can't find old topic's on how to get current density display (or current density animation), you may start a new thread on current density displays. Note that the useful bandwidth of series fed arrays is relatively small. You can derive this from the s11 curve versus frequency (use sufficient frequency points).
