AMD,做大事还要拘小节!
compromising size, power consumption, and sometimes noise to have a powerful unit, and GPUs growing in size just can't remain a mainstay forever. Even this YouTube video by Linus on building a compact gaming PC with Nvidia's GTX 970 mini has accumulated more than 300,000 views. (In case you're wondering, the YouTube channel averages about 80,000 views per video). Although Nvidia's 970 gave gamers a taste of small form factor gaming, AMD's Nano is giving the full deal. 4K gaming can now much more practically come to life in small form factors, and for those wanting a powerful living room PC or just a less-compromised solution, it's an evolution they've been waiting for.
Conclusion
At a price point of $649, the R9 Nano is twice the cost of Nvidia's 970 Mini, so we're talking premium silicon and most likely low volumes. However, the Nano comes with many price redeeming factors as it is the fastest and most 4K capable Mini ITX card, and since it's 30% faster than the next best thing, it's the only choice in the category, which as I mentioned has at least some demand.
AMD is running on fumes without the luxury of giving any flashy redline-revving performances, and with the company's limited resources, the R9 Nano gets the thumbs up. There's not much here, but it works. AMD basically rethought the clock speed, power consumption, card size, and radiator design of the R9 Fury X and created the Nano. AMD is critically thinking about what it can do to earn every penny possible in order to make it a year out from now and release the truly important products, Zen and K12.
To end on a safety net, I must note that AMD is a dangerous stock with an especially hazy future. With AMD's debt and lack of cash, it's an all-or-nothing bet. Investors must realize this, and furthermore they must realize that even if AMD does release Zen, it must be capable of competing with Intel or else it's over for AMD; my high-risk tolerance only lets even myself own a very tiny long position, so proceed only with caution.
