Introduction

Most know of AMD's (NASDAQ:AMD) struggles and you may be curious as to why a single new GPU should be worth the time of an investor, but given AMD's unique condition, I find it especially important to take note of the details.

The bulk of the company's revenues, such as those from the PC market, is predictably going to worsen especially, and the semi-custom consoles sales are likely to remain stable. We can predict these larger markets, but the problem is that investors don't know if the continuing trends will be enough for AMD to survive because there are so many unpredictable segments that AMD has diversified into. Most believe that if, and only if, AMD lives to launch Zen and K12 next year, the company has a chance to restore its health. Because of these details, I decided that I would talk about AMD's new R9 Nano and why I think it will provide AMD with a tiny increase in its unknown survivability chances.

The AMD Radeon R9 Nano, briefly

Last Thursday, AMD fulfilled the wonders of the formerly previewed Radeon R9 Nano GPU, and it turns out, that the R9 Nano is identical to the chipmaker's flagship GPU, the Fury X, in every way except clock speed and power consumption, which are both toned down to make this tiny 6" unit possible. Bloggers have been giving AMD the thumbs up on their achievement, because the next best thing in compact Mini-ITX GPUs is the Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) GTX 970 Mini-ITX, a card that's 30% slower according to AMD's benchmarks. AMD is touting this card as the fastest, smallest GPU on the market and since it is just that, the company is much deserving of its premium price tag of $649. At such a premium, this card is unlikely to sell at high volume but since this is the best and only realistic 4K gaming unit for those looking to build compact Mini-ITX desktops, it will be a real eye catcher for those looking into the growing Mini-ITX market.

The Small PC Evolution

For the first time in forever, we are really seeing a true shift in the size of desktop gaming PCs, which have actually been growing in size in the last decade. This is especially true with the size of graphics cards, which are mostly to blame for the increase. What used to be a little card with a small fan has come to be the elephant in the room with sophisticated radiators and multiple fans working overtime just to keep from overheating.
