Resources about heat-sink design and thermal theory
Look at
www.aavid.com
There is a good program about heat sink selection and design.
Mandi
FANT,
Where can I find at aavid the selection and design program ? I didn't find it.
Thanks.
Here is one version of the program. It is called coolcat
The second version is the most recent.
here is another application note"mounting considerations for power semiconductors"
flatulent, zgx,
Thank you for the uploaded files.
PS. I went again to aavid. The coolcat program is there really, but not at first glance reachable.
Thank you for the great resources.
But most of the time, I use copper on the PCB for heat dissipation.
I also comsume lots of PCB space.
The area of the copper poly on the PCB must
be calcuated by hand. I wonder if anyone has any
applcaition program for calculating the area?
Thank you for any information
Since you have the formulas you use by hand, you could automate the calculations with a spread sheet. Over the years I have done this many times and used the spread sheets as needed years later.
Peter Vizmuller's RF Design Guide , includes with the book some excell files for thermal resistance calculations. I tihink I have seen the complete ebook posted in the ebook section. If you want it and cannot find it I will upload it.
Cross
flatulent, I agree that you can use a spreadsheet, but not in complex situations, where you have tapered-fins, multi-angle fins, different manufacturing capabilities...etc.
Powerful software packages can do much more than just simple "cascaded" claculations.
Cheers.
Transmeta has a good thermal guide with an example how you design a notebook.
