Why spectrum of AM or FM signal show both positive and negative frequency domain?

The spectrum of a AM or FM signal show both positive and negative part of frequency domain. Why is that? Isnt' the positive part sufficient?

AM and FM signal's spectrum consists of 2 sided spectrum shifted up to the carrier frequency. The negative frequencies are a mathematical exactness, but are essential since otherwise it would be missing the lower sideband in the original spectrum.
