how to predict the radiation patter of an antenna intutively
There is not a general rule for finding radiation pattern of all types of antennas intutively. but for some antenna you can image the overall radiation pattern of them without field calculation.
1-almost all of two arms antenna such as dipole, bowtie, spiral, biconical, lptpa, lptta and etc. have the broad side radiation pattern which is bidirectional and perpendicular to arms axis. the pattern will be narrower in ageneral sence by increase in antenna arms length.
2-almost all aperture antenna such as slot, slit, horn, reflectors and etc. have the unideractional radiation pattern in the aperture normal direction. the pattern will be narrower in ageneral sence by increase in antenna aperture surface.
Having some experience you may guess the approximately radiation pattern for different antenna types, but is not the case for current distribution. This one can take some unpredictable paths that only a simulation or a measurement can show you.
Hi
There is simple prog. PCAAD 5 cost ~450S that will help
you to do it. look at

PL
There is no specific rule but:
if the antenna is uppon a ground, so you can imagine a half space radiation
If the antenna is a wire one, you can imagine the maximum radiation in the plane containing the feed point
you must be used with two main types of antennas: wire (dipole, monopole, IFA) and planar (patch) to be able to have an idea about the radiation pattern without calculation.
