need help in understanding wave patterns of waveguides

the wave patterns are plotted as 2d projections ..

and they shown some waveforms based on the derived eqns ...on 2d..

but there need to 3d right ? x, y and the one more for magnitude...?

i can do some mapping from the eqns to the wave patterns ..but not exactly ...


any Reference material or help will be appreciated
