50 ohm monopole antenna
i'm fresh in designing monopole antenna for my project. however, I've heard that HFSS allows me to simulate the antenna radiation and conditions. Can anyone briefly provide me with any tips or steps?
Thank you!
No need for simulation. Just take a piece of copper clad PCB, drill a hole for an SMA, and solder the flange to the ground plane. Then solder wire to center conductor and trim until return loss is good. You can also use wire as a counterpoise instead of PCB.
Thank you, madengr
what if i would also like to know some design procedures, say if I want to match the antenna to 50ohm, what should i do.
or how could i determine the central frequency and bandwidth by changing the dimension of the antenna. Hope someone could provide a few useful tips.
regards
Monopole is typically 1/4 wavelength. Bending the groundplane down into a cone (I think 30 degress) will increase bandwidth and yield a close 50 ohm match. A graduate level EM textbook (ex Advanced Engineering Electromagnetics by Balanis) should derive the solution for a monople over infinite ground plane.
Dear madengr,
thank you. Is it possible that we can create a monopole antenna using a substrate on PCB. In addition, how do I go about doing it if it is possible.
Regards
Hi
There is a program called supernec.
I used it 4 years ago when I was doing the same job
It is very good.
I have it but I don't know how I can post it to u because of the size issues.
Thanks
EZNEC is cheaper
1/4,1/8 wavelength is ok,but we don't know the range of frequency that you need ,related to the matching, you can use matching circuit to solve it.
Hi haytham,
thank you for your advice. Is it possible that you send the software to my yahoo mail red1981mage@yahoo.com.sg
Thanx!

Hi,
Thanx everyone.
The frequency I am designing for is 860M to 960M. I am not sure about how to calculate the required dimention on FR4 PCB.
regards
beside using a wire monopole, you can design a printed monopole on the PCB.

- Power considerations for 50 Ohm resistors in power combiners
- HFSS - 50 Ohm Coaxial line terminated with 50 Ohm impedance boundary. |S11| too large
