What is the S-parameter?

In optical systems S & P are the two polarization planes in an optical path. They reside at 90 degrees two each other. Like one horizontal and one vertical. "S" is referring to the horizontal while "P" refers to vertical.
If this is not the parameter you are dealing with can you list the actual application.

S-Parameters as defined in microwave transistors is essentially the transistor parameters at high frequencies. It is similar to the ABCD parameters for transisitors at low frequencies or DC.

s parameters are special parameters of two ports that microwave engineers use to design various building blocks
s parameter represent the ratio between reflected voltage and incident voltage i.e. S12=(V1-)/(V2+)
where V1- is the reflected voltage at port 1 and V2+ is the incident voltage on port 2 , where all other ports' incident voltage equal zero
this is what i could remember try to check it first
s11:input reflection cofficient with matched output port
s21:forward transmition gain with matched out put port
s22:output reflection cofficient with matched input port
s12:reverse transmition gain with matched in put port

S-parameters = scattering parameters ...... since noone has mentioned that yet.
Nice information above, but have anybody find good tool to make multiports S-parameter block from couple of 2-port measure with VNA from example multiport filters etc.
I prefer open source version if this exist.

College on company find one, but after trying out this, find make exactly 180 degree error on unknow place in processing flow from measure, combining S-paramteres file and simulate in Ansoft and giving wrong cable length for example reactive combining filters... ...I looking after damn simple '+/-' sign error on phase value or real/Im in input data, input-reading process in program or processing, but program was closed source...

s parameters are the laplace parameters having real and imagnary parts.
