In Thomas book, what is the physical meaning of the correlation coefficient equation shown in page 365?

To clarify my question more precisely, how to evaluate the mean-square value of a certain current? and how to derive this equation starting from covariance and standard deviation of random variables' perspective?

I am really confused.
