hfss tutorial

Hi to everybody,

I usually work on simulating Metamaterials (SRRs, spirals, CLLs) and EBG/AMCs (mushrooms, hilbert resonators...) with HFSS, applying the common two sides PEC BC and two sides PMC BC to a single unit cell, with a Waveport as excitation.

But maybe there could be some problems if the resonator (in the planar case) is not symmetrical like a spiral (instead of a square patch used in the mushroom like surfaces). Then, the Master/Slave BC should be used.

I tried to follow Remski's example in HFSS version 9, but I'm lost with the field calculator. Moreover, I've tried on v10 the "FSS Reference", but I have only good results for the empty (free space) case, but not for the mushroom like surface (FSS + Ground Plane).

I have terrible problems on how to define the equations (with the Field Calculator) to properly extract the Magnitude and Phase of the reflection coefficient (S11) in that cases. Polylines, surfaces... all is confusing.

So, can anyone help me with a silly example on HFSS v9 or 10 on how to calculate the reflection coefficient of an AMC/EBG surface using Master/Slave as BC?

Thanks in advance,

Pere J. Ferrer

With v10 you must set one Rad or PML boundary to "Referenze for FSS" and "Incident wave". This works, says the ansoft support. It looks ok to me. You cannot excite a "radiating only" boundary with a plane wave.

I'm sorry, but I knew that. My purpose is to extract not only the Magnitude, but the Phase of the S parameters. In version 10, with Reference for FSS, only the magnitude is obtained. And with a backing ground plane, a ripple around 1 appears in the magnitude of S11 when the frequency is increased.

I'm still seeking for the proper solution.

Pere
