discrete mixer

What type of discrete mixer is suited for wideband mixing. I thought about a diode ring or a MOS switch.
I dont have access to integrated mixers like Mini circuits and similar.
I read about the performance of the single and double balanced modulator and built a double balanced mixer. The main problem was the transformer was not perfectly simetric and the LO port was not perfectly balanced, so the remaining signal entered the IF strip and caused some distorsion.
I want to ask if there is a way to make a precise transformer for DBM or to use a MOS transistor.

TOKO makes good balun transformers to design diode mixers:

If the diodes has very close characteristics there should be no problem getting good balance.
