Quick question about slot and patch antennas

Is it possible to excite a TM mode (like the one excited by a quarter-wavelength monopole over a ground plane) using a slot antenna? And with a patch antenna?
Any specific reference to paper/books/etc will be very appreciated.

I believe it is possible with a circular patch.
