system for measurein phase change at one frequency in S band

Describe a system for measuring phase changes at one frequency in S band with a dynamic range of 100 dB. The desired accuracy for this system is 0.5. Elaborate on what you think are the major problems.

Use a Vector Network Analyzer, which usually has 120dB dynamic range.

0.5 what, degrees? Measurement speed? Cost?

You problems are going to be signal to noise, the number of averages you need when the signal to noise is poor, how fast you need to make the overall measurement, and phase changes in the amplifier chain as the signal goes from very strong to very week, or as the components drift with temperature.

Can you calibrate the system often (loop back on the cables, etc).

I built such a system recently, but only with around 80 dB dynamic range. Be glad to build you one.

For a 100dB dynamic range (+10dBm to -90dBm) I am using successfully N5242A up to 3GHz.
0.5 degrees accuracy is not a problem to achieve but depends very much by the quality of calibration.
