How EBG structure suppresses surface waves?

I have done a simulation for EBG structure. (The model in the doc file)
I have searched for theoretical explanation about the phenomenon, but didn't find any.
Can anyone post any information regarding EBG structure, in particular, how it suppresses surface waves.

the stopband of an EBG operates in certain frequencies. in the stopband, it presents high impedances. the structure you present seens have no vias. for such a structure, no bandgap will observed, but in-phase reflection.
