Looking for info about optimum design of smart antenna array

hi...i am doing the an undergraduate dissertation on "Optimum design of smart antenna array", can anyone please give me an idea about it and tell me how should i start it and what should i read first to be able to understand it. i have to implement it in MATLAB. i would appreciate your responds.
