ULTRA COMPACT CHIP ANTENNA DATA GUIDE
I don't know if this post is an advertise or something, but anyway I have to say that all the SMD chip antennas that I've tested works very poorly in terms of radiation efficiency.
In fact I knew this for many years: is impossible to make a very small antenna to work like a normal antenna, whatever technology you use.
In most chip antenna design that I've seen, actually the feeder radiates more energy than antenna itself.
I second THAT opinion. In addition, it is hard to get a good radiation pattern since you are ususally forced to install the chip at the edge of a board, with all the components to one side of it. Unless the board is standing upright, it will be a funky pattern! But practically, they do have two advantages:
1) They are very small
2) They are usually surrounded by a high K material, so they are a little less susceptable to proximity effect mistuning of the antenna
