Microstrip compensation pads

Hello,

does anybody know for what reason the pads in the above picture are used ?

Thanks.

Tuning. What is the component?

I am not a RF expert....If you observe they are used at the bends....Might be to eliminate any reflections....

As shown in the photo, they have no effect.

However, if tuning was needed, then you could connect them to the line. Short open ended stubs will add some shunt capacitance.

@volker_muehlhaus.
So you think these additional pads are shorted and if needed a bondwire is placed. Right ?

Well, it is still a bit confusing, because BENDS do normally have capacitive reaction ---> then, an open circuited pad + bondwire could act inductive to compensate for that

I don't think that the purpose is related to the bends. The electrical properties of bends are well understood, so there is no need to tune them later. My guess is that it is related to some other matching. The pads are unconnected, so we can see that this tuning option was not needed.

Ok, then to finalize the talk.
OPEN and SHORT circuited pads are used to realize stubs by bondwire technology for tuning purposes.

Thank you all.

Not for bondwire, I designed many such circuits without bondwire, they just used for paste-and-try tuning.

I used to design such patterns along T-Line. I used them for tuning purposes by adding capacitive part or stub length by bonding these pads. If designed on Rogers like material (compared to alumina), you can also scratch these pads with a very fine needle to reduce the capacitive value of this pad.
On your picture we can see the wilkinson is at the input or output of // PA transistors, in this case it can also helps to improve the symetry by tuning the input/output impedance.

Hope it helps too.

Definitely they are for tuning purpose. Even if was mentioned that are for reducing reflections, this actually means tuning.
