using hfss to compute permittivity

Dear friends,

hope that you all are fine and happy.

i have a question regarding HFSS.

Can we find out or plot permittivity and permeability of a composite structure over a frequency sweep using HFSS?

If its possible in any other electromagetic simulator, then please also let me know.

waiting for your quick responses.

I am working on a similar problem, and you *might* be able to do this if you can perform some mathematical post-processing on the S-Parameters produced by HFSS.

You can find the extraction equations specifically for DNG materials in the following IEEE paper:
R. Ziolkowski, "Design, Fabrication, and Testing of Double Negative Metamaterials"

Dear friend,

thanks alot for your help ..i have downloaded the paper and i will go through it and then talk to you.
please if possible for you , give me your hotmail id. Also tell me whether you are a student or teacher in any university.

Faisal.

I'm working on the similar problem and it is a very tricky issue. You have to be very careful since each method has some weakness due to certain assumptions and approximations. Structure geometry and symmetry properties have important influence on the extracted parameters. There are equations with multiple branches and roots. You must select the branch visely. Here are a few papers to consider:

"Determination of effective permittivity and permeability of metamaterials from reflection and transmission coefficients" by D. R. Smith, S. Schultz, P. Markos, and C. M. Soukoulis

"Electromagnetic parameter retrieval from inhomogeneous metamaterials" by D. R. Smith, D. C. Vier, Th. Koschny, and C. M. Soukoulis

"Robust method to retrieve the constitutive effective parameters of metamaterials" by Xudong Chen, Tomasz M. Grzegorczyk, Bae-Ian Wu, Joe Pacheco, Jr., and Jin Au Kong

Hello ozgur,

I think I've read at least two of the papers you mention. I agree with your caution regarding the assumptions that are made.

That being said, I do prefer the Ziolkowski paper at this point. His points regarding the root branch make sense to me, and his solutions are relatively easy to implement in MATLAB. Or maybe I'm just lazy! Hahahaha! :D
