Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) confirmed today that President Renee James, the highest ranking woman in the company, is stepping down to pursue a chief executive role outside the company. Her decision to seek out a CEO role elsewhere ends a career with the chip giant SPANning over 28 years, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal today.

The move means Intel will face even more diversity issues during the time CEO Brian Krzanich has been pushing for greater gender-equality at his company and the tech industry in general. A direct consequence of James' resignation is Aicha Evans, a wireless technology general manager who has now been elevated to a critical role at Intel’s management committee, a decision not necessarily linked to the 75% male-workforce at the company.

"When Brian and I were appointed to our current roles," James said in a letter to Intel employees, "I knew then that being the leader of a company was something that I desired as part of my own leadership journey. Now is the right time for me to take that next step."

Renee James does have plans to stay at Intel until January to help with the transition, despite no clear successor in the frame as of yet. "We fully support her in this decision," Krzanich said in a statement. The company also noted James' departure "has no effect on Intel's commitment to diversity and inclusion or our diversity initiative."

Another high profile departure will be Intel Capital's President Arvind Sodhani, who will leave the company in January after 35-year of service. He will be replaced by Mergers and Acquisitions Head Wendell Brooks.

The changes in leadership have already trickled down to a shake-up on an executive level during a challenging period for Intel. The company ended 2014 positively, owing to an increased demand in the PC market. However, the subsequent year was worse, due to weakening PC shipments and overestimated revenue targets.

Executives Mike Bell and Hermann Eul will also be going their separate ways, after losing out on their leadership roles last year. The two were in charge of mobile and wearable devices, so their departure could mean Intel is pursuing different directions in both areas.
