Re: How to find the gain?

Hi All,

I am designing a patch antenna 2.7GHz. I'm using sweep oscillator as transmitter by pumping 10dBm and spectrum analyzer as receiver and getting -35dBm. The distance btw the this transceiver is 1.5m.

By calculating link budget, I'm getting 0.8dBi.

My question is:

In spectrum analyzer, I set the reference level at 0dBm. If I increase the reference level at 18dBm ( for example)......more or less I get a short waveform.....
So how do I can get a good high gain? Can anybody tell me the settings in FSG R&S spectrum analyzer? Give me a suggestion on this, plz.

Added after 2 minutes:

substrate material is FR4.

If you use a sweep generator that is not synced to the sweep of the spectrum analyzer, then it will be hard to obtain a stable reading. It would be best to set the sweep time of the generator to its shortes setting and that of the SA long, using little sweep points and the largest RBW/VBW setting.

Your path loss is 44.6dB. You also need to know your cable losses and measurement antenna gain to measure the antenna gain of your AUT. It seems to me that 0.8dBi for an FR4 antenna is not pad (patch antenna efficiency is usually <50%, so you'll measure 3dB loss already because of the loss tangent of the FR4 material). A lower loss antenna would be a PIFA for example.
