when u need a better directivity and better gain u either increase the physical length of the antenna or u do it by making a array of multiple antennas placed .5 to a lambda apart for better directivity and lowering the sidelobe levels.a general euqation for array factor is given by
Sin(NΨ/2)/Nsin(Ψ/2).where N is the number of elements.Ψ=KdcosΘ+β
where d is the distance between each element β is the phase lead or lag between sucessive elements.
