dipole with splash plate

I have searched many texts and none seem to say what the optimum size of a splash plate is for a dipole reflector feed. I want to make it as small as possibe, so I am thinking a wavelength in diameter would be the min. I could make it. Does anyone have any input or advice on this?

In fact the minimum diameter would be half-wavelength.
