smart antenna adaptive beamforming

can anyone please help me clear a doubt about the following:
For adaptive beamforming using LMS or RLS or CMA algorithm, do the signal in a smart antenna have to pass through a DOA estimator(using algorithm like MUSIC or ESPRIT) before going to the adaptive beamformer?

Or DOA estimation(using MUSIC or ESPRIT) is not a pre-requisite for adaptive beamforming using LMS or RLS or CMA?
