Patch antenna design for rfid applications

Hi

I am currently working in RFID project. I am completely new to this field. I browsed in the internet and got the basic knowledge about RFID.

Now I would like to know, which software will be used to design a PCB antenna.

Also it would be very nice, if anyone refer me some materials or books about patch antenna design for rfid applications.

Thanks in advance.

hi
the best software for simulation of microstrip is HFSS11 and u can find may book for learn about microstrip
u should first define the simulation frequency

thank you for your reply.
I have found some books aBOUT MICROSTRIP

THANK YOU for your reply.
I have found some books about microstrip antenna, but if I go for the antenna design according to that book, the antenna size is large. I want small antenna on the PCB. Is there any special book available for such antennas. I heard such antennas are called as Smart antennas. But I didnt get further details about such antennas.
The book I referred for Microstrip antenna is Antenna Theory: Analysis Design by Constantine A. Balanis.

If you have other books or materials about Small Antenna, Please give me details.

Balanis is a profound text book, and should be sufficient to find a basic answer to nearly all antenna related questions.

As you say, microstrip antennas are too large, I wonder if you possibly try to achieve something unreasonable. What's your frequency of interest? Patch antennas are suitable for 860 MHz or 2.4 GHz RFID. You'll have difficulties with small 860 MHz tags, where only "electrical small" antennas (< λ/2) may be feasible. Balanis is also discussing them, you may want to refer to special literature additionally. But you should consider, that they'll have a reduced performance compared to regular size antennas.

If the frequency is below 860 MHz, microstrip or patch antennas won't be feasible, you should rather go for inductive couplers.

Hi,

My recomendation is software wilp-d , I think it is excelent sw for start , please check WIPL-D* --** High Frequency Electromagnetic Modeling and Simulation Software, what more in demo you can make full designe of small antennas.
More information about a patch antenna you can find on pages 254-266, The RF in RFID Daniel M.Dobkin.

put rfid in the search and you will find lot of Threads that will give you info

and read the pdfs in this link Alien Technology - Products - RFID Tags

hi
u can use many technique for small antenna and miniaturization of antenna
u can read "Compact and Broadband Microstrip Antennas" kim lu wong
and another book of this author about wireless antenna
if u define the frequency u want may be we can help u more
