Hi,
In an application note for mixer parameters from Maxim, it is mentioned that:
"A major advantage of passive mixers is that they can also be used as frequency upconverters."
The link for the application note is: http://http://www.eetindia.co.in/STA...URCES=DOWNLOAD
Does it mean that active mixers have some disadvantage when used as up converters?

Yes because remember that active devices introduce electroic noise and then you amplify them.
Hi Miguel,
Thanks for the reply. If this is case, then practically, are active up converters never employed? If they are then are there any specific applications for which they are preferred?
The link not working for me
When the active mixer noise is not important in your system.
And the active mixer can give you signal gain.
Thanks for the replies.
