Doubt about ebg and microstrip antenna

I am new about the usage of HFSS and I am starting to study EBG structures.
My doubt is:
As I understood, if I have a microstrip antenna to which one I will apply the EBG structure, I need first study the unit cell of the EBG structure, then I will get some results, but I don't understand how simulate the effect of these EBG structure on the whole antenna. Eve if I apply the same EBG structure over another antenna how I will simulate the effects of the EBG structre?
Please let me know if I am clear with my question.
