i want to ask about the distance covered by the IR beam in a remote controller,
It can really acheive about 2m, but the normal IR led we can buy is having a very low distance coverage(range)
Use cheap TSAL4400 TSAL6400, even with that IR diode you can get 5m-7m.
Depends lots from protocol what you plan to use, from diode, ....
All devices remote controls have at least few meter distance transmission.
Basic IR diode can give lots, if you use it on right way.
Every TV IR RC (I mean branded original not some crash) have at least few meters range. If range is become shorter, then is time to clean RC or replace batteries.
With 150mA IR Led you can reach 80m. This IR LED often used in CCTV Illumination devices, or implemented around camera objective.
All led current can be considered to duty cycle 100%, but for RC you can use different impulse current. All described in datasheet of particular part. Some led can receive on impulse 300-400mA of current.
Here is my project 8m distance without problems, I use 3mm TSAL4400 (this red led is IR led and he is at 90 degree from PCB, on other side after quartz goes 12V battery A27, all compact and small as car remote control key, even smaller) :
How can this technique be acheived in an IR sensor, which need only 30cm to just switch on a port of uC ?
Not this, this using IR protocol coding and ID code for switching on or off three switches on receiver.
But for basic switching use receiver circuit what I give in other thread but here is again, at NC or NO use IR diode or photo transistor, the same for TX, you can use optocoupler but its not necessary (I recommend). For TX circuit use simplest IR diode with power, or you can use with NE555 timer to setup duty cycle :
A standard RC receiver IC (TSOP1838) is specified to achieve 35 m range with 300 mA send current.
I apologize Varunme you need 35m or 35cm ?
It can be done with IR or Laser. I rather use laser for long distance.
The 35 m specification can be considered too optimistic, considering non-ideal conditions. But 8 to 10 m is still a reasonable number and achieved by most home entertainement equipment.
