sas cable losses

I'm curious that whether there is any significant difference between backplane traces and cable?

Like their loss mechanism and frequency shape?

Open planar structures, e.g. differential microstrip must be expected to show more dispersion (due to skin effect losses and radiation) than a qualified SATA cable. Also impedance matching may be limited depending on your PCB technology. But they generally work, even a on a two layer standard 60 mils FR4 PCB.
