高通出手收购，Ikanos有什么来头

高通在8月6日宣布，其子公司--高通创锐讯，已经达成对Ikanos通信公司的收购协议，Ikanos是一家可为企业办公和网关解决方案提供超高性能宽带网络半导体和软件的公司。交易金额按照每股2.75美元现金的方式，共1708万股，交易总额预计为0.47亿美元。此举证实高通在已有3G/4G市场的蜂窝无线电技术以及用于多种用途的其他通信芯片之外，希望进一步扩大其业务领域和服务范畴。

Qualcomm, Inc. (NASDAQ:QCOM) has announced today that its subsidiary, Qualcomm Atheros, has entered into an agreement to purchase Ikanos Communications, a provider of ultra-performance broadband networking semiconductors and softwares designed for central office and gateway solutions. The move stems from Qualcomm’s desire to expand its list of operations and services, which have comprised of cellular radios to tap into the 3G/4G market and other communication chips used for multiple purposes.

The semiconductor giant has agreed to acquire all the issued and outstanding stock of Ikanos for $2.75 per share in cash, which means that with 17.08 million shares outstanding, the deal could stand to be worth approximately $47 million. Ikanos shares were up more than 55% to $2.70 after the news of the acquisition crossed the wires.

The purchase, which will be absorbed into Qualcomm Atheros, will help build on the company’s aims to provide high-functioning broadband access to enhance the Internet of Things (IoT) experience in the home. The Qualcomm Subsidiary boasts a high pedigree in several modern technologies such as carrier Wi-Fi and wired connectivity, which tie in closely to the home gateway and related solutions provided by Ikanos, as both outfits look towards providing a central hub for an all-things connected smarthome.

"The combination of Qualcomm Atheros' broad home gateway IP portfolio, including Wi-Fi, powerline, small cell, and Ethernet switch technologies, and Ikanos' advanced wired modem technology, is designed to create a complete solution for a wide range of home gateway products to better serve the carrier segment," said Rahul Patel, SVP and General Manager of connectivity for Qualcomm.

Qualcomm Atheros will now have access to a consortium of leading technologies, including A/VDSL2 and G.fast modem chipsets and solutions, which will likely be deployed for infrastructures such as premises and central office equipment. Ikanos delivers its multi-mode gateway and accelerator technology for LTE, Fiber, Ethernet and hybrid-copper applications. As far as software goes, the company represents its chipset with remote diagnosis, management and optimization of the broadband connection, along with voice-over command features.

Ikanos also offers benefits via its collaboration with Alcatel-Lucent focusing on fixed access communication technologies, which could help Qualcomm’s product arm achieve a stronger portfolio in the space.

Reports claim the transaction is expected to conclude before the turn of the year, depending on whether closing conditions are met. Qualcomm Atheros last acquired Wilocity in July 2014, a fabless semiconductor company founded by former Intel employees in 2007. Qualcomm shares are down 0.8% to $63 in mid-day trading today.
