Multimode Scattering Matrix

Can anyone help me define the scattering matrix for when there are multimodes in each port (the number of electrical ports exceeds the number of physical ports) please?

If so, can you also explain how you can relate the scattering parameters of each electrical mode to the actual measured results obtained using VNA?
