pifa antenna design

Require antenna design(PIFA or Planar Monopole Antenna) of Quad Band.
GSM900/1800/1900/UMTS.(890-960/1710-2170 MHz)

Please refer any paper or book regarding this..................
I'm badly in need of this...........

Advance Thanks.

Take a look at this document:

https://www.edaboard.com/viewtopic.php?p=459271#459271

I don't think of PIFA's as particularly broad band. If I had that task I would consider wideband structures as serious alternatives first.

can u refer any such kind of design examples.

advance thanks

I do have this document but its hard to implement in hand held devices

I could list a variety of broadband antennas. Rather than doing that I will give you to think about and describe your application in detail. Once you have set the stage and described the need and situation it makes a recommendation more meaningful.

Hello johnson.mike,

The following thesis document on
"Multi-Band Antenna for Handheld Tranceivers" by Choon Wee Khoo may help you lot...

Thanks for your reply.

Antenna shown in figure sholud be replaced by antenna embedded in rigid PCB(say 0.4 or 0.8mm thick FR4),
which can be perpendicular to main circuit pcb.

Dimensions of antenna around 30X7 mm
7mm is the height.
Return loss around -6dB.

kindly Suggest design around this dimension

Advance thanks.....

There are several key factors here. Your wavelength varies from a little over a foot at the lowest frequency to about 6 inches at the high end. For positive gain you probably need an antenna (monopole like) that is at least a quarter wavelength long. You say that you have only 30 mm. This puts you in a difficult design space, particularly at the lowest frequencies..

What are your gain and pattern requirements? Hopefully -5 dBi or so is acceptable.

I would consider sleeve monopoles and wide/fat monopole structures to widen the band. Look into circular or elliptical monopole shapes.

This also is probably a development where you will need a good 3D simulator to experiment.

My basic warning is that the space is too small to expect much out of the resulting antenna.

Yes.But this kind of wide band antennas are for Higher frequencies like more than 2GHz.
But I require for an antenna which covers from 890 to 2170MHz.
I got a design which covers 1710 to 2500MHz.
But i find difficult to get antenna design above said frequencies.......
any more reference design or book appreciated.........

Antennas of the type I mentioned will work at these slightly lower frequencies. Unfortunately you are looking for electrically small antennas. You may not be able to do much in it way of what is normally considered to be "good" performance because you just don't have the space. I hope you have margin elsewhere in the link budget.

Thanks all.

I've simulated spiral monopole antenna as mentioned in Planar Antennas for wireless communication by Kin-Lu-Wong in Fidelity software.

I got positive return loss in out of band region what might be the reason?
attached here is the simulated returnloss plot...............

Hi johnson.mike,

For a small device like a mobile phone, dominant contribution to radiation donot come from the antenna, however, from the device (chassis) itself specially at low frequency (800/900 Mhz). In that case, the antenna works as impedance transformer between the antenna feed port and ground plane.

Using this concept, you don't need an resonant antenna structure at 900 Mhz, however, your maximum radiation depends on the size of the chassis. It is known now, a 130x40 mm chassis has resonant frequency around 900 MHz. If your device is near to this dimension, you can build a antenna structure which covers all these bands.

There are lot of papers on this idea. It is better if you read the 2nd chapter ("Handset Antennas)" of "Antennas for portable device" by Chen to get a better understanding.

shameem
