There is not too much research done in tht area of antennas that look into things. Such as an antenna array that can image a kidney with microwaves. Or an antenna that can contact various surfaces and see inside, such as concrete/sheetrock/wood/plastic. The contacting media will detune the antenna, so the antenna has to take that into account with various dielectric layers/lenses, etc. In order for one antenna to talk to many media, it has to be a broadband/robust design. There are other issues, like distortion of the beam as you travel thru the layers at an angle, ways to focus the spot size in 3D, etc.
