Xbee transceivers in serial communication

Dear all

I am doing a project based on wireless communication. I am using Xbee transceivers as shown in the link (http://www.robotshop.com/productinfo...112&lang=en-US).

I wanted to know if i need to program the transceivers one as transmitter and one as receiver prior to sending data or receiving data. If yes can you please guide me through the procedure. Or can i simply make connections to the serial transmission line on the Xbee module for transmission without programming in the X-CTU software?
