Hello,
In one of the experimental Radar Set-ups, we took basic measurements to estimate target range at three different ranges.
The Basic principle we are using is:
"If we collect step frequency radar data (coming from a fixed stationary target) and take the Fourier transform of that, it translates to the range of the target."
In our experimental set-up we are using E8362B Agilent Network Analyzer,
Frequency sweep : 9- 11 GHz
Frequency Step : 15MHz
Number of Frequency Steps : 100
Horn Antenna used as transceiver antenna from 8-12 GHz bandwidth model PM 7302 X (Philips IMA Sivers PM 7).
That gives us range resolution of 10cm and an unambiguous range of 10m.
Data was collected by pointing antenna towards a wall keeping distance betwee antenna and wall at three different distances i.e. 90cm ,105 cm and 174 cm.
But when the Fourier transform of s11 parameter obtained from network analyzer was performed all the data peaked in the same range(whether we use phase only, amplitude only or combined)
What could be the possible effect of this ?
we tried using different objects and different ranges but data showed same frequency of phase or amplitude observed over different frequencies.
Could Antenna beam ,feed through coupling be involved in this defect?
We want to determine target range using step-frequency principle in just "radar line of sight".
This is such simple an experiment and basic principles are being tested,Please guide us through the factors that are causes of this problem, i.e. Same range bin peaking for different ranges?
1) Should we use only phase data of s-parameters or amplitude or both?
2) If background subtraction is needed,on what data i have to perform it,(Data collected over various frequency points prior to Fourier transform or after Fourier transform?)
3) Does any type of filtering is required on the data before or after Fourier transforming?
I don't want to do complete picture imaging ,I just want to obtain ranges of targets in radar cross range line of sight?
S11 parameter collected for three different ranges mentioned are attached herewith.
Looking Anxiously for your reply and help in understanding this.
