Monopulse tracking (Use of sum signal)

Hello everyone!

can anyone tell me whats the use of SUM signal in monopulse tracking when i'm trying to track a satellite from a mobile vahicle.Well i read that the sum signal is for using as a reference for the difference/error signal (whatever) but it didn't made sense for me.
