Stubs in the electronics or microwave

Hello experts!

I have some questions given in the class. My teacher said that find them on the internet. But she didn't teach us this topic. She said, first all student find some information about this then we will discuss in the next class about stub.

I know what stubs are. But I tried to find the types of the stubs and unfortunately, I could not find them. I don't know how many types of stubs. I need your help guys. What are the main types and sub types of the stubs?

Thank you very much.

Do you understand the use of the Smith chart for figuring impedance tranformations using transmission line sections?

Stub lines are probably most easily understood by considering rotating an open or short through the appropriate angle on a Smith chart (A stub line is just a special case of a transmission line matching section).

If you don't understand the Smith chart, there are some reasonable tutorials on line, nd it is worth learning to use.

Regards, Dan.

Hi Dan Mills

Sorry I don't understand what is Smith Chart and what it is use to.
It is just starting of microwave communication classes. But our teacher told us that we will look Smith Chart in later classes but first we need short introduction of Stubs for this. So every student will come in class with the searched material about Stubs on the internet.

I searched it sir, but I didn't find the types of the Stubs. Smith chart is not introduced to us yet in the class so I don't want to discuss it now. I want just a brief introduction so that if anything is asked by teacher then I could answer it. Then teacher will teach us the topic of Stubs in detail.

Thank you.

You can take a look at the book "Microwave Engineering" by Pozar. There is a brief introduction for stubs in chapter 5 under the title "single stub tuning".
They can be categorized into 1.Shunt and 2.Series stubs and from another point of view there are 1.Open and 2.Shorted stubs. Actually this is nothing but a piece of transmission line which length is chosen reasonably in order to have a desired impedance or admittance.
One can understand the concept without being familiar with Smith Chart.

Thank you bro.

I will read this book before attending my lectures on the stubs.

But I have another question to ask, what stubs are used usually?

if you are going to do microwave engineering, you need to know what impedance or admittance happens when you terminate a length of transmission line with a known impedance. go find that equation in a book, and figure out the two cases where the end is terminated in an open circuit, and then a short circuit. once you understand that, it will make sense when you connect one of those
"stubs" to a thru transmission line.
