hfss 64 bit
I'd like to simulate metamaterials with HFSS. Is there much necessary to use 64-bit version HFSS? Otherwise, will the memory be a problem, like out of memory?

32-bit HFSS can only address and use 2 GB of RAM memory, even if you have e.g. 4 GB in your PC with 32-bit Windows. But you can use the switch /3GB in boot.ini to get HFSS to use up to 3 GB of memory. 32-bit HFSS is one of the very few 32-bit programs that can use this feature. But the /3GB switch does not work on all 32-bit PC's.
64-bit HFSS on a 64-bit Windows can use all memory you have in your PC.
If you have a large HFSS design that requires more than 2 GB of RAM, 32-bit HFSS starts swapping to the harddisk which is very slow compared to RAM memory access. Moving this design to a 64-bit HFSS (and a 64-bit PC with >2 GB of RAM) gives a dramatic increase in performance and simulation speed, as the simulation can run entirely in RAM.

Just to echo VSWR's response. HFSS runs just fine on 32-bit machines but the difference with a 64-bit machine and all the RAM you can afford is dramatic.
Do everything you can to get it on to a 64-bit platform (and big RAM) and save yourself grief.
How do you verify that you are running the 64bit version of HFSS? I have a 64bit/ 4Gb Ram workstation but I do not know if my installation of HFSSv10 is 64bit.
Look to windows task manager.
All 32-bit applications are marked with "*32" note , if not the application is running as a native 64-bit
HFSS.exe is x32 and HFSSCOMENGINE.exe is x32 but HF3d.exe is not. Should all HFSS exe be non x32 or if the matrix program is non x32 and the others arn't it is ok.
Note that 64 bit version of HFSS 11 does not work on Vista, only on XP 64.
It is unknown when this is going to be fixed.
However, I would always use 64 bit version, as it is imperative to use as much RAM as possible.

You mean it's not officially supported. I have been running it for 8 months on Vista-64 and it works fine. You just have to run the installer in XP-SP2 mode to trick it.
I did not manage even to install HFSS 11 on Windows vista Business 64, it would just crash.
Please tell me:
1. How do you run it in XP SP 2 mode?
2. Where can I get the license code for HFSS 11?

Just right click on the setup.exe and enable the XP compatibility mode. See a screenshot here:

I'm running HFSS 10 on VISTA 32-bit with 4GB of RAM(actually about 3.2GB usable because of 32-bit OS).
Does anybody know how could I increase the memory limit?
There is no booy.ini in VISTA!
You can't. You must move to Vista-64 to go past 3.x GB.
Thank you. I'm going to switch to VISTA-64 and I'll upgrade my RAM to 8GB.
But I'm not sure if I can have its benefits without a 64-bit edition of HFSS.
Any body can help? how much I need to pay for 64-bit upgrade of HFSS and how if I want to go for ver.11.
Currently I'm using ver 10 and it must be 32-bit as running on 32-bit vista.
My hardware is fully 64-bit (intel C2D 6850).

If you are running version 10.0 it is probably not in their support window. They are currently at ver 11.1.
i have been able to run both 32 bit and 64 bit versions without an extra charge. I believe that is their policy but I would check with them to make sure. Don't take my word for it.

Failed to check out license 'hfss_desktop'.
Invalid (inconsistent) license key (FLEXlm Error - 8 )
what must I do?

Does anyone know how to actually do this? I'm, on Vista, and I don't see an obvious place to do this
