Good Day everyone, I'm from Malaysia and currently doing a project on:

"Optimization of Microstrip Patch Antenna Using Particle Swarm Optimization"

i have done the literature review on PSO and pratical training, doing exercise on antenna design using IE3D.for IE3D antenna design software i still can handle it, but for PSO optimisation, i'm confusing on it.

Well, PSO is a new thing for me and i also hv not much knowledge on antenna design, but i'm sure i will try my best to do that.

Basically, I'm clear with PSO theory and i'm ready to write the coding on it, but i don't know how to implement the PSO into the antenna design... or simply said, i am confusing on where to start to do my optimisation on the patch antenna...and
how to find the fitness function from my antenna.

so, i'm here kindly seeking for guidance from you all on where to start , or steps to optimise the antenna using PSO ....and i really hope to get any resources or ebooks on PSO on antenna design or others related study items..

PSO is some kind of global optimization scheme. It should be quite good for some sophisticated optimization. Like Gentic optimizer, it does require large number of iterations. It will need to do many sampling. It is good to use IE3D to drive it because of the efficiency and accuracy. It is documented on the Appendix of the user's manual on how you can use IE3D engine in external optimizer.

As long as the Fitness function, you will need to define it based upon your goals.

jian, can u show me some example??
i was confused at the input parameters.
how we relate the coding to our design?? use what methods?

about the appendix, are u mean this"Appendix AU. EM Optimization and Different Schemes"??

Hi, technetium:

We have not implemented PSO in IE3D. We once was thinking about to implement it a few years ago. However, we found PSO still needed many iterations. It is not as efficient as the AdaptiveEM and GA schemes implemented into IE3D. We didn't do it. It might be time we can implement it into the FastEM Design Kit of IE3D (allowing you to do real time EM tuning and optimization).

When you talk about PSO on IE3D, I assume you want to make a PSO program to call IE3D for optimizaiton. In that case, you should read Appendix AA of IE3D user's manual. It is talking about how you can use external optimizer with IE3D to do optimization. Certainly, you will need to write your own Fitness function. If you want us to implement it for you, you can send us your PSO code and we can integrate it into IE3D. Regards.
