surface waves in atenna
1) what are the sureface waves
2) how they propagate in an antena (patch)
3) how can we see in simulation softwares
Regards
Here is a resume where I got from http://www.urel.feec.vutbr.cz/~raida..._en/index.html :
"Surface wave is a form of energy which is not radiated by the antenna along the dielectric substrate. Surface waves are guided by the boundary between two media. Surface waves propagate along this boundary. Surface waves can be observed at microstrip transmission lines, where the wave does not propagate along the microstrip conductor. Amplitude of surface waves exponentially decreases in the direction, which is perpendicular to the boundary."
Is there any way to realize them during simulation
Regards
I think it will depend on the software capabilities......
Br,
Like which software is capable of handle the problem.

Ansoft HFSS, refer to this picture (from www.ansoft.com)

Can you please upload a simulation file, because i am unable to find at ansoft.
Thanks
Its not a simulation, its just a presentation file. Check it here:

Br,
Does this mean that Surface waves cannot be realized by simulation.
You can check the effect of surface wave in the radiation pattern at Phi=90.
rgds,
surface wave are generate when the Er > 1
it increase the coupling between various element in the array.
If you want to know more about the surface wave the refer the book "MICROSTRIP ANTENNA DESIGN HANDBOOK" pg. 43 - 47.
this book gives the good explain of the surface wave
Who is the author of the book and can u explain a little about the theory mention in the book.
Hi mwband
What is the effect of surface wave on the radiation pattern at phi=90
If you try some methods to reduce the surface wave (for instance: DGS, EBG, etc) then you may observe that the power radiated in this direction will be suppressed.

Hi mwband and man_arief
From ur explanation and the picutre, it seems that surface waves are rather bandlimited. Aslo surface waves cannot be mearsured rather their infulece can be felt on the performance.
Is there any way to supress them for UWB.
what is the effect of surface waves in microstrip antenna
- Spurious radiation and surface waves in MSP Antenna
- Simultaneously transmit LHCP and RHCP waves using two closely spaced patch antennas?
- "EM" waves without the E possible right? (thought-experiment)
- Millimeter and terahertz waves suffer from attenuation
- Damped waves by electromechanical vibrator. Bandwidth considerations and more
- Normalized travelling waves in S parameter definition
