how to design a microstrip antenna with omnidirectional radiation pattern
how to design a microstrip antenna with omnidirectional radiation pattern
any suggestions

Is the antenna frequency 2.4GHz?
yes my antenna frequency 2.4GH for microstrip patch antenna
The patch antenna does not have omnidirectional pattern.
Have a look at planar inverted F antennas (PIFA).

can you give a brief explanation why they are not omni directional?
"varuniyengar" said in a earlier post that "Yes, a patch antenna can have omni radiation pattern in Azi and Ele planes.
These antennas are used for aerospace applications (as an array), mobile phones use PIFA and can have omni radiation pattern"
Simple monopole will work
FR4 Substrate
Copper Element
Antenna Dimension - 40x50 (1.54 thickness)
Ground Plane - 40x25 (.02 thickness)
Radiator - 4x24 (.02 thickness)
NOTE: all dimensions in mm
Do you know what omnidirectional means?
Looking at the radiation pattern, you can easily see that the patch antenna is directive.
I found a IEEE article that demonstrates the design of a microstrip omnidirectional antenna. This should help you. The solutions seem somewhat practical. Good Luck......

r u sure it wil get omnidirectional pattern
You will not get omni in all the three planes (PHI-0, PHI-90 and Theta-90) by you get quaziomni in the two elevations! (no deep nulls)
can u tel me how to simulate in ansoft hfss v.11...stil i dont knw how to giv excitation and boundary...

tel me the exact dimension...substrate,patch,thickness
Wait till Friday will upload the .dxf and HFSS files!
Hello,
You can to designed the microstrip antenna with Omni radiation pattern by without a ground plane. Usually the microstrip antenna consisted of a radiator, a substrate and a ground is uni-directional beam.
Good luck.
