What do they call swing modulation ?

Came across a guy that operates the 11 metres band using odd equipment, odd terminology and jargon I never heard in 40 years of being a legal ham radio operator.
They somehow transmit about 4 Watts keying the PTT but when talking, are transmitting hundreds of watts, with monster linear amplifiers in brands never heard of (garage made ?) and some kind of modifications. They call it swing modulation.

Said it is AM, they do not have to 'clarify' any single sideband beat oscillator on reception.

What the hell is going on ?

Perhaps the jargon for Swing Modulators dates back to the Prohi era in the 20's when swing dancing and illegal booze was popular. SOme may gave been fake changes to the strength meter, others voice compression or AGC, but the most effective ones would boost power beyond legal limits.

Its either plain overmodulation or it increases the mean carrier level as the audio is turned up. Its some form of AM.
